This year’s edition stands out for proposals related to water and intelligent driving
The School of Telecommunication Engineering is holding a new edition of LPRO Days this Thursday and Friday, a technology fair where students present the projects developed throughout the course in the Project Laboratory subject. As usual, the event takes place in two sessions open to the university community and the general public: on Thursday at the Verbum Museum in Vigo, in the morning for pre-university students and in the afternoon for the general public, and on Friday at the School’s own facilities.
This year, a record number of pre-university students attended the exhibition stands at the Verbum Museum: 449 students from nine secondary schools in Vigo, consolidating this initiative as one of the main showcases of the innovative talent of UVigo students and their ability to transform technical knowledge into solutions for real-world challenges.
€5,000 in prizes funded by industry partners
Through this activity, the EET reinforces its commitment to applied innovation, collaborative work, and the connection between university, industry, and society. The School’s director, Rebeca Díaz, highlighted the strong involvement of the business sector in the event. In fact, five companies from the ConexiónTeleco network will be responsible for awarding the prizes to the best projects: five awards of €1,000 each, sponsored by Gradiant, Optare Solutions, Marine Instruments, Quobis, and CTAG.
Additionally, other companies such as Teltek, Fluge, Innatial, Técnica Engineering, ONCE, Wireless Galicia, Colabora Ingenieros, and Telefónica are also participating in the event.
Projects entirely developed by students
All projects have been fully designed and developed by the students: eleven multidisciplinary teams presenting prototypes focused on areas such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, road safety, health, accessibility, and environmental monitoring. Over these two days, they have the opportunity to present and explain their proposals to the public and industry professionals.
Professor Manuel Caeiro, coordinator of this subject at the School of Telecommunication Engineering, particularly highlights “the variety of topics and the use of new technologies” in this edition. As an interesting note, he points out the presentation of “several projects dealing with water-related topics: spring water quality, flood detection, and underwater explosions.” He also emphasizes other initiatives related to safety and mobility, such as driver assistance systems. “I believe we will once again surprise with the diversity of topics addressed,” he stressed.
11 teams, 11 ways of approaching technology
The eleven projects presented in this edition of LPRO Days reflect the wide range of fields in which students from the School of Telecommunication Engineering apply new technologies, with proposals focused on artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, virtual reality, security, and environmental monitoring.
AugaCalidade is a low-cost IoT system for real-time monitoring of water quality in rural supply systems. In response to post-fire contamination risks, it uses multiparametric sensing, NB-IoT communications, and artificial intelligence to generate early warnings, ensuring safe consumption through an interactive web platform.

BOLA (Basic Offside Line Assistance) is a referee assistance system for non-professional football matches. It operates semi-automatically and provides information on players’ offside positions using computer vision algorithms. The referee interacts with the system through a web platform, where initial calibration is defined and relevant frames are analyzed.

Bookit is a digital solution for managing study rooms, featuring web-based reservations, IoT monitoring of rooms, and services to simplify mobility between different available spaces.

DormIA DormIA is a sleep monitoring system that combines sensors with artificial intelligence. It measures biological and environmental indicators, processes data using machine learning algorithms, and provides personalized recommendations incorporating clinical criteria through a conversational assistant to improve sleep quality.

FerroVixía transforms commercial trains into active sensors capable of detecting anomalies in railway tracks. Using IoT devices and digital signal processing, the prototype distinguishes fixed elements, such as switch points, from geometric defects. Information is stored in a cloud database and displayed through a web interface that enables predictive maintenance and improves railway safety.

GuideGuard is a surveillance solution for audio guides using BLE beacons and ESP32 nodes. By applying filtering algorithms to process RSSI power levels in real time, the software validates user trajectories and distinguishes between normal movement and theft attempts, providing active protection and reducing false alarms.

HydRIA is a modular monitoring and early warning system for floods, based on a low-cost and energy-efficient IoT architecture. By leveraging LoRa technology, it achieves wide coverage for data from various sensors, which are published on an open-access web application.

OPSIS is a car display control system designed to reduce driver distraction time. It allows interaction through gaze tracking and controls integrated into the steering wheel. It improves safety by reducing distractions and makes the display accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Sinfonie is a training tool for orchestral conducting without the need for a physical orchestra. It uses virtual reality and a smart baton so that conductors or amateur users can practice gestures or experience conducting an orchestra.

SIRA is a device designed to be integrated into vehicles, capable of detecting emergency sirens and estimating their direction of arrival in real time. The system contributes to faster and more coordinated traffic responses, improving driver situational awareness and road safety.

WaveBlaster is an autonomous system for detecting underwater explosions associated with illegal fishing through real-time acoustic analysis. It integrates signal recording via a hydrophone, detection and classification algorithms, data transmission via LoRa, and a web server to visualize events and facilitate monitoring.

In the field of mobility and safety, notable initiatives include Bola, a referee assistance system to detect offside situations using computer vision; Sira, designed to detect emergency sirens to improve traffic response; Opsis, which enables in-car screen control through eye tracking to reduce driver distraction; and FerroVixía, a solution for detecting anomalies in railway tracks using IoT technologies and advanced signal processing.
Health and well-being are also represented with projects such as DormIA, an intelligent sleep monitoring system based on biometric sensors and machine learning algorithms, and Sinfonie, a virtual reality tool for orchestra conducting training using motion capture and a smart baton.
Environmental challenges and territory monitoring form another major thematic block, with projects such as AugaCalidade, focused on analyzing water quality in rural supply systems; HydRIA, an early warning platform for floods; and WaveBlaster, aimed at detecting underwater explosions associated with illegal fishing.
The list is completed by Bookit, a platform for the intelligent management of university study rooms, and GuideGuard, a surveillance solution for audioguides based on BLE and ESP32 technologies to reduce theft and false alarms.
