Cybersecurity takes center stage at the 4th edition of the Teleco Olympiad

Winning teams will compete at the national level

With the sponsorship of the Indra–University of Vigo Chair, Oesía, Televés, and the BorgWarner–University of Vigo Chair, the 4th edition of the National Teleco Olympiad was held this Friday at the School of Telecommunication Engineering on the Vigo campus.

Throughout the morning, more than 200 students from 24 secondary schools (ESO), Baccalaureate, and Vocational Education and Training (VET) centers from across Galicia showcased their projects in the corridors and presented them in the school’s assembly hall. As a novelty in this edition of the competition, participants were required to incorporate cybersecurity aspects, either within the project itself or in its development, by adopting best practices such as password protection, hardware or software updates, and related measures.

“Unlike the national competition, where there is only one category for ESO student teams, here at the EET we divide the competition into two categories: one for Years 1–2 of ESO and another for Years 3–4. In this way, we believe it is fairer for the teams, and we also aim to encourage interest in information and communication technologies among younger students,” explains Rebeca P. Díaz, Director of the School of Telecommunication Engineering. As in previous editions, teams of Baccalaureate and Vocational Education and Training (VET) students also took part in the competition.

Winning teams advance to the national competition

The winners of the regional competition held this Friday at the EET will compete at the national level in May against the best teams selected from around twenty Schools of Telecommunication Engineering across Spain that organize this initiative. Prizes were also awarded as follows: a first prize of €400 for the team and €400 for the school; a second prize of €300 for the team; and a third prize of €200 for the team.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers from ESO, Baccalaureate, and VET for their interest in this competition. Without their involvement, it would be impossible to reach this number of students and projects,” stated the Director of the EET.
