ElasFanTIC: Teleco celebrates the International Day of Girls in ICT

Participants took part in several workshops led by senior students

The School of Telecommunication Engineering brought forward the celebration of the International Day of Girls in ICT to this Friday with the Elas FanTIC event, an activity sponsored by the Indra-UVigo Chair in Engineering and Technology that brought around fifty primary school pupils to the School. Throughout the morning, they had the opportunity to explore the world of programming and robotics, guided by the School’s own students, in an engaging, fun, and age-appropriate way.

Coming from the Vigo schools CEIP Plurilingüe Sobreira-Valadares and CEIP Fonte Escura, the event included a robotics workshop with CuteBot and another workshop on codes related to telecommunications, both delivered by a dozen students from the EET. “This is another way of making women visible in the field of engineering, so that pupils in the final years of primary school can have female role models as early as possible,” explains the School’s director, Rebeca P. Díaz.

Coordinated by Professor Soledad Torres, the School’s Equality Officer, the event aims to encourage girls, from an early age, to consider directing their studies and future careers toward technological fields. This is particularly important given that forecasts indicate that by 2050, 75% of jobs will be related to STEM areas and that, at the current pace, gender parity in this field will not be achieved until around the year 2100.
