This training program, run by the NextChip Chair of the Universidade de Vigo, will train participants in the design, testing and packaging of photonic chips.

The NextChip Chair is funded by the the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure with funds from the European Resilience and Recovery Mechanism. It develops testing and characterization tools of next-generation photonic and electronic chips.

Objectives

The degree seeks training in design, measurement, fabrication and packaging of photonic and electronic devices with significant hands-on training. The aim is to prepare participants for highly qualified positions to meet the raising job demand in photonic chip design and production plants.

Who is the target audience?

This training is especially aimed at students and university graduates in the field of technology and mainly in Physics and Engineering, such as Telecommunications, Electronics, Mechanics… or other professionals with work experience in the field of study.

Contents

The full program, consisting of four microcredentials, grants the title “Expert in Integrated Photonic Device Development” from the University of Vigo and is delivered over six months with no tuition fees.

The microcredentials are independent and may be completed separately. Passing each microcredential awards a certificate recognized within the European Union, although the full Expert qualification requires completing all four microcredentials:

  • Microcredential: Design and Testing of Photonic Integrated Circuits (10 ECTS)
    • Design and Testing of Passive Photonic Integrated Circuits
    • Design and Testing of Active Photonic Integrated Circuits
    • Design and Testing of Passive RF Integrated Circuits
  • Microcredential: Fabrication and Packaging of Photonic Chips (6 ECTS)
    • Fabrication of Photonic Integrated Circuits in a Clean Room
    • Packaging of Integrated Circuits
  • Microcredential: Introduction to Quantum Photonics (3 ECTS)
    • Introduction to Quantum Photonics
  • Microcredential: Project Management and Technology Transfer (3 ECTS)
    • Project Management and Technology Transfer

    Methodology

The course will be mostly held at the Cidade Tecnolóxica de Vigo (Citexvi), a facility located in Universidade de Vigo’s Campus, and will count with the participation of international experts in the field. Training will include numerous practical activities.

The students will also participate in an intensive training at the Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), in Braga, Portugal.

    Calendar and timetable

The course will begin on February 2 and end on June 24, 2026.

Classes will be held Monday to Friday, from 15:30 to 19:30.

    Pre-registration and enrollment

Pre-registration need to be done through the website of the Centro de Posgrao e Formación Permanente of Universidade de Vigo (https://cpfp.uvigo.gal/) and registration will be free of charge for participants.
